The Butterfly Mind

Perception versus Reality

On my personal journey through life I have gone through various States of Being: Science, Atheism, Philosophy, Religion and until recently: New Age Spirituality.

I am no longer in that final state. I guess I am Beyond Spirituality — though I don’t know where. By Beyond Spirituality, I mean the recognition that Spirituality is certainly not the end-point. That there is a Way of Being, beyond New Age Thinking, Spirituality, Religion, Philosophy, Atheism and Science.

After becoming disillusioned by Spirituality I wondered what is beyond? Well by having the question, the Universe provides an answer! Through a series of seemingly random events, I was made of aware of the Ancient Hindu beliefs of Advaita Vedanta, Hofstadter’s Strange Loops and thanks to Kurt Godel, that even Mathematics can not be complete hence Mathematics and any system of self-introspection (such as, we puny humans examining our navels) can not attain the Ultimate Truth.

In essence: All that we perceive, conceptualize, feel or even download from our spirit guides and angels, are all constructs of our own Minds.

We simply don’t know and can’t ever know what’s beyond our Perception. We will never discover The Ultimate Truth. All that’s left is: To Accept the Flow of your own Life — whatever that may be.

Even current thinking in Philosophy (what some call Post Post-Modern Philosophy), does have some interesting theories but these are all concepts of the Mind serialized in an inefficient mentally-constraining form, called: Language.

What helped me reach this unknown state was the typical spiritual posts like the following which kind-of highlights the illusions we construct:

This post immediately lit up my emotions. I had loads of questions:

  1. Do Butterflies awaken when they transmute from caterpillar to Butterfly? Are Butterflies in their final form Spiritually Awake? (Not really since the post did use Butterflies as a simile).
  2. Why do people focus on the life-cycle of Butterflies so much? To the point of using them as Spirit Animals, posting memes about them and even getting butterfly tattoos on their bodies?
  3. Why are some creatures like Butterflys so special, for example: snakes are evil, pigs are dirty and owls are wise, etc? What makes these creatures so special to us?

Then I came across the following meme about Wasps:

By this time, I was very curious about the spiritual community’s fascination of Butterflies, over other animals.

Here on our beautiful planet, land-based Plants are at the very bottom of the food chain. Without these sacred plants, other creatures within Earth’s ecosystem would not exist. Hence, we would not exist.

Plants and many Insects enjoy a healthy synergy that has been the backbone of Evolutionary Life on Earth. Insects such as Honeybees, Bumblebees and even Wasps help pollinate plants.

However what most people don’t realize is that the pollination performed by these little critters is far more so than even Butterflies! Butterflies steal the nectar from flowers, which is what the flower uses to show gratitude to Honeybees etc, for their help in pollination.

Worse still Butterflies in their Caterpillar form, devastate the leaves on plants, degrading a plants ability to bear fruit and procreate via flowers.

Question is why are Butterflies so beautiful? Through Evolution the Butterflies’ wing patterns create an illusion of size and strength to ward off larger prey such as reptiles, amphibians and birds. All that nectar makes Butterflies a very healthy high-protein snack!

However, people with their subjective perceptions add undue value to the transformation of a squat caterpillar to a beautiful Butterfly. However, if people took a moment to see beyond the Essence they award to Butterflies, by being aware of their own perceptions, then they would see the Butterfly for what it really is. Butterflies are simply part of the food-chain, the ecosystem of the Earth.

A final thought: The Question is not what you look at, but what you see.

Peace.
